AMSA SA Branch Responds to Harmful Algal Bloom Crisis
AMSA SA Branch Responds to Harmful Algal Bloom Crisis

The South Australian Branch has submitted an evidence-based response to the Senate Inquiry into the unprecedented harmful algal bloom (HAB) impacting over 4,000 km² of our coastline and more than 450 marine species.

This event—one of the most severe and persistent HABs recorded globally—has triggered mass mortalities, disrupted marine industries, and raised serious concerns for biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and community wellbeing.

Our submission calls for:

* Immediate, coordinated environmental data collection
* A national research program to address HAB knowledge gaps
* Long-term investment in monitoring, forecasting, and restoration
* Inclusion of Indigenous-led monitoring and community engagement
* A national framework for responding to large-scale marine mortality events

This is a pivotal moment to strengthen Australia’s marine science capacity and ensure our ecosystems and industries are resilient to future change.
