This is a very comprehensive book about the values, conservation significance and management, of the approximately 8411 offshore islands of Australia.  Forty-six authors have contributed to the book, all recognised experts in their fields.  The book is divided into 16 chapters that cover values (economic, social and environmental), policy and legal context, pest management, ‘arks’ for biodiversity, integration of resource development with conservation, indigenous issues, the interplay between tourism and conservation, management and recommendations.

The intent of the authors was to provide an easy to understand book for politicians, policy makers, scientists, and visitors with interests in Australia’s offshore islands.  A diverse and consequently difficult audience to cater for.  —I can’t help but doubt that any politician will read the 250 odd pages, while it may not provide enough detail for scientists.

The book is well presented, and a good synthesis of material regarding the diverse habitats that constitute Australia’s offshore islands.  There is a wealth of information in the book with lots of good examples and case studies.  Overall the case is strongly made that these unique ecosystems require strong, evidenced based management that incorporates socio-economic considerations, recognising that people are fundamental to the long term success of any conservation initiatives.
