The marine waters of South Australia support diverse and ecologically important marine ecosystems including meadow-forming seagrasses and sections of the Great Southern Reef, which are socially and economically important for fisheries and aquaculture industries. The coastline of southern Australia is truly unique, being the most extensive southward facing coastline in the world with distinct oceanography and a very high level of endemic marine species. The importance of marine industries and environments to the SA economy and way of life means that the state has a large marine science community relative to our population size. The three SA universities are all involved in marine research, in addition to the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI, a division of the Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA), other SA government departments, and non-government organisations. Key marine research themes in SA include climate change, integrated marine management, restoration (particularly seagrass and native oyster reef), seafood production and sustainability, and many more.

The AMSA SA branch aims to represent a diverse range of marine research. Within SA, our branch plays an important role in organising events that bring the research community together and foster collaboration. We have researchers on the committee who are at differing career stages, including students, early career researchers, and established scientists. The students on the AMSA SA committee are consistently active members, regularly taking on important committee roles and leading the planning of events.

We encourage any AMSA members in SA who are interested in getting involved and helping to deliver events and services to marine scientists in SA to get in touch.
