Dr Karen Miller

Dr Karen Miller

AMSA Councillor 2007-

AMSA Secretary 2010-

Dr Karen Miller is a lecturer and research fellow with the Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies at the University of Tasmania. Her field of research is ecological genetics of marine invertebrates and she has worked extensively in tropical and temperate Australia, and more recently has extended her research to encompass deep sea and Antarctic ecosystems.

Karen became fascinated with marine biology during her undergraduate years at the University of Queensland where she went on to complete an honours year studying coral ecology at Heron Island Research Station. She completed a PhD at James Cook University in 1994, and has subsequently held post-doctoral positions with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand, and at the University of Wollongong.

Karen first joined AMSA as a PhD student in the early 1990s and was elected to the AMSA council in 2007, and as Assistant Secretary in 2008. She feels that throughout her scientific career, AMSA has been omnipresent, and has been an integral part of her development as a scientist ? through opportunities at conferences and in bringing the broader scientific community together. Karen is happy to now be giving back to AMSA some of the support that she has received since the early days of being a student!
